Forbes and the Lachlan Valley

We arrive in Forbes via Eugowra; home of a bushrangers biggest haul, so big in fact they had to leave huge amounts of gold behind because it was too heavy and just take the paper money. Frank Gardiner's Gang, including Ben Hall were responsible. Ross of course dragged me out into the countryside chasing Escort Rock the site of the actual robbery and into the paddocks to check out the wheel ruts from the stage coaches. The ladies in Eugowra at the Museum were a fountain of knowledge and sent us in the right direction.

Forbes is a country town full of lovely historical buildings and gorgeous old homes. The caravan park is green and shady, lucky as the days are quite hot and it's shorts and t-shirts weather. Evenings are crisp. We did a very nice walk along Lake Forbes late one afternoon and found a huge free camp for caravanners. So many in fact that there were more there than in the caravan park!

Forbes is also the place where Ben Hall the bushranger is buried. Who knew Ross was such a bushranger buff.

Another day we headed to Parkes and visited the Dish - just as interesting as 30 years ago - better facilities and educational info too.

When we left Forbes for Canberra we again passed through our favourite little town of Cowra and headed further to Boorowa, found a brilliant little antique shop with a coffee shop inside. People sitting all throughout the shop having lunch and a coffee. Definitely on the return visit list.

Canberra this arvo!
